Colorado History Books
Blood and Thunder: The Epic Story of Kit Carson and the Conquest of the American West by Hampton Sides. This is a brilliant biography that keeps you transfixed by the story and teaches you more than you bargained for.
Chief
Left Hand, by Margaret Coel. Well-written biography of a man who
understood what was coming.
The Corpse on Boomerang Road, by MaryJoy Martin, a stunning and impeccably researched account of the labor wars in Telluride at the turn of the last century. Or, how a mining company and its lackeys managed to take complete control of a town, including "deporting" union members.
The Sand Creek Massacre, by Stan Hoig. The definitive book about the events at Sand Creek. My only complaint is that the author persists in referring to Cheyenne and Arapaho women as "squaws," even in unquoted text. Gawd.
